King Romulus Vitus

The king did his daily round of walk in the castle, watching people prepare their day here and there. His tunic made of the finest satin fell five inches above his ankle, colored brown and orange that glowed under the seeping sunlight of the great hall's stained windows. He looked like a majestic statue, the way he stood so gloriously.
Romulus needed not the golden crown placed atop of his head to impose it -- his grandeur is already enough to recognize him as the king of the five kingdoms.
But his nobleness could only fall so short at times, for he is guilty throughout the land of being a glutton. Not only in food, but as well as in drinks and all of life's indulgence. And the moment he asked one of his handmaidens to fetch him wine, that aristocratic atmosphere of his has already bend.
He sat on the throne, made of black iron with accents of gold and ruby with the head of a gold wolf  sculpted on the top frame of it. His people came forth one by one through the morning, expressing their wishes and judgement upon their personal cases.
"I'm bored." He grumbled, placing a gold cup of wine on his lips as they came and left. He would need to put charge of his own right hand so that he wouldn't have to deal of these petty issues anymore. But the question is, who?

Matilda Vita

Carrying in several folders of paper under her arm, and after passing through the various levels of security involved, the small Matilda stood at the far end of the throne room, projecting her usually soft voice across the rather grandiose setting "Your majesty? May I request an ear for a few moments? I bring forth matters of economics which are in need of your divine attention." Sure, Matilda may not have entirely believed her King would be the one to solve these issues, but the fact of the matter was she needed his permission and approval to perform any action, a problem further exacerbated by the King's own spending becoming a notable part of her calculations.

King Romulus Vitus

"So... bored..." He whined, throwing his head back and closing his eyes before a familiar voice echoed in the room.
"Ah! Matilda!" He jumped off his seat with a huge grin on his face as if being spared from death by bore. Hurriedly, he handed his cup to his squire before greeting the young lady with a kiss on the cheek. With a wave of a hand, he dismissed the guards that separated them to relieve them from their station, signalling that he'll be fine. "What is it, my sweet?"

"Well, your highness," the blonde opened softly, looking up at the much taller man, more because she was extremely short than the King being tall "You tasked me with carrying out an inquiry into the kingdom's budgeting and spending. And I'm delighted to inform you that my studies are complete!" Matilda replied, smiling politely, her clothing much more simple, modest and lightweight, as to be expected of a scholar or bureaucrat, displaying the red and orange colours of her allegiance "I believe the results may be of interest."

Alfred Atherton

Alfred had always stood at the king's side, never to counsel him, but to protect him and his precious kingdom from any possible harm. He liked to think that he would be most effective wielding his longsword than sitting on a lord's seat. However he could barely even use it these days. Recently his duties mostly composed of standing beside the king, trailing behind him, and listening to the same complaints and requests from the people in the Capitol and all over the kingdom.
All he had to do was stand and look gallant in front of the eyeing crowd and wait until the king requests of something or until some fool walks up and hopes to cause trouble.

King Romulus Vitus

He tried to mask his reaction with great surprise and interest. Being king, he quickly learned that the economy was the least of his concerns. But alas, it's still a part of the kingdom and must be dealt with. 'If I were to have a hand, he'd be the one doing all of this ungallant work,' he thought with a smile at the younger. "What is the good news, my dear? Do tell."

"Good...May be a slight exaggeration, your highness." she informed him "If it interests you to read all my documents, you are very welcome to, but the fact of the matter is I think we're spending too much. The kingdom isn't really turning a profit or any economic growth."

King Romulus Vitus

He grit his teeth upon hearing the fact of the kingdom's spending. The man acknowledged her statement, at least. Even though it wasn't any of good news and is definitely something he never wished to hear. "It shall be brought up within the next counsel meeting..." Romulus muttered, turning to his chancellor to write it down on his script. "Still, the royal ball must happen." He declared, officially stating that it cannot be unwritten whatever happens.

"Of course it will." Matilda nodded "I would just like to issue a message of caution to be applied in terms of the expense of the ordeal. While it's a very grand and necessary event, we may encounter problems if the visual prestige comes with such dire economic consequences."

King Romulus Vitus

Romulus frowned, not impressed by the topic. The best food and drinks are already a must, of course. But he already demanded an ice sculpture of him at least 6 foot tall and at least a thousand bouquets of flowers and arrangement to go with the wall. Too late to cancel them now. Still, he kept his mouth shut -- thinking it might not be best to tell Matilda about it now. "Noted." He smiled. "Shall I see you at the ball?"

"Well, I do worry about the cash flow of the kingdom. But I suppose that's just what happens in my line of work. As they say, there are lies, damned lies and statistics." the small woman shrugged "I suppose numbers can't tell the entire story, right?" Of course, Matilda's faith in her own work and calculations was unquestioned, but again, she was just making a quiet, subtle point that she was concerned, while not showing a total lack of faith in her monarch who, in all honesty, was well intentioned if not entirely financially savvy, like she was.

"Please do not tire yourself too much. It worries me." He escorted her to her seat. The table set is on a balcony at least seven stories high that overlooked the kingdom. Fruit cakes, chocolate cakes, lemon cakes are soon served in trays then followed with pitchers of fine wines. "Indeed, they're just numbers. There are more important things than numbers..." He began with his wine, looking out across the land while the fresh breeze of morning air greeted them gently.

Francis was in town on both business and pleasure. There were investments of the Atherton House in the Capitol that he needed to peek into, as a few had had some strange numbers lately. It was mostly just bookkeeping, verifying a few things here and there, and the like. Arthur had also wanted him to check up on Alfred to see how he was doing. When he was in the castle, Francis could see the answer right away: bored. But it was also nice to see the Capital, so he was being a bit of a tourist in his free time. After a bit of gossiping with some of the residents of the castle, Francis was on his own. That king of theirs was clearly occupied with chatting up a girl, so he just didn't bother him for now.

"Only the finest of the land," He grinned, raising a cup of wine. "It's glorious, isn't it?" Romulus nodded at the scenery from the balcony. "Quite a massive land for one man..."
It haven't been long when one of the golden fleece murmured a lord's presence in the castle. The gleeful king perked up, and looked over his shoulder. "Ah! Francis!" Romulus cheered, waving at him to join them.

Francis perked up a bit when he heard his name being called. He looked at the King, the man that had raised him and then promptly sent him off to be married to someone he'd only met a few times, his guardian and the guardian of the realm, and offered him a small, polite smile. He went over to him, and bowed humbly. "I didn't want to interrupt you, Your Grace," he murmured to him. It was so strange to see him. He looked to the other person there, and bowed again, though less deeply. "I don't believe we've met, My Lady," he told her, hazarding a guess at her station.

The king got off his seat and gave the younger a quick hug, pulled away and scanned him from head to toe. "Spare the formality lad, you know I hate it." He chuckled, tapping the blond's shoulder. "It's been a while. Look at you, all grown to bring valor to the kingdom."
If he recalled correctly, the last time he'd seen him was the day he sent him off for marriage. Which has been possibly a decade. Despite having numerous bastards, not once had he treated them wrong -- God knows the truth. Indeed he may have more faults than an ordinary man, but being heartless has never been one of them. "I'm sorry you two have never met but this is your sister Matilda, Chief Cleric of the Capitol and my Master of Coins."

Alfred Atherton, The Glorious Bae

As he was tasked to do, though unspoken, he tailed the king like a good little lion he was. Might this be the most silent he had been all month. All he did was listen to king's conversation. It might be impolite--but in his terms, nothing was ever impolite--but Alfred grinned widely as he saw Francis, calling him by his name quite loudly.

Arthur Atherton

Whenever Arthur visited the capitol he made a point to visit the King, although that was mostly so that he could check up on his brother. If he had a choice he'd never visit there. The main reason he'd come this time was to arrange payments for Fastus' mining goods. While there was an alliance between the two families through his marriage to Francis, he wasn't willing to cost his family's wealth for the sake of the King's happiness. He entered and stood beside Francis, acting interested in their conversation as he eye'd Alfred, subtly trying to get his attention.

And just when he thought his day was going to be dull. "A warning of your visit would have been appreciated. I could have prepared!" Though Francis was in the middle of a conversation with the king, Alfred pulled him along as he embraced him and Arthur both, though pulled back almost abruptly. He forgot he still had a few unresolved conflicts with his older brother due to his decision to leave Fastus. "Forgive me," he addressed to the king and his lady companion, hoping to charm them with his warm smile. "I was only overzealous to see my family again than I forgot to honor my king."
